Castles, Historic Houses & Museums

While Balmoral Castle is the largest local draw there are many other castles, museums and historic houses within easy reach of The Gordon.

From dramatic coastal strongholds to Jacobite fortresses; ancestral seats to inspiration for Walt Disney - the local castles of Kildrummy, Dunottar, Drum, Crathes, Braemar, Huntly, Knock, Fyvie, Slains Craigievar, Fraser and Corgarff can provide many days entertainment covering a wide range of historical periods.

The town of Alford holds two excellent museums - the Grampian Transport Museum and the Alford Heritage Museum, the latter providing a fascinating glimpse into past lives in this rural part of the country - the Victorian school room is a particular highlight.  For a more unusual museum why not try the Peterhead Prison Museum - experiencing life in a real Victorian era prison.

For an altogether grander experience the county boasts wonderful stately homes and gardens in Leith Hall, Haddo House, Duff House and Pitmedden Garden.
