Outdoors is most definitely the best place to be most days enjoying our spectacular countryside.  Whether you are joining us for golf, fishing or winter sports you will find everything you need close by.  The Dee which flows through Ballater is renowned as one of the world’s great salmon rivers, while Aberdeenshire boasts over 50 golf courses including a very scenic and enjoyable one right here in the village itself.  Major skiing and winter sports centres at The Lecht and Glenshee are close at hand when the snow starts to fall while The Cairngorm is also easily reachable for the day.

We are surrounded by excellent hill walking country – whether you plan to go Munro bagging (climbing mountains more than 3000 feet) or just want a gentle climb for a better view.  Ballater boasts two excellent hill walks which start within the village – Craigendarroch to the north and Craig Coillich to the south, both around 1200 feet.  At 1700 feet Mither Tap accessed from the Bennachie Centre car park is a perennially popular climb.  Of the local Munros the path to Lochnagar (3800 feet) starts at Glen Muick car park just to the south of Ballater, while that to Ben Macdui (4300 feet, Britain’s second highest mountain) is found at Linn o’ Dee car park.

Flat walkers and cyclists will enjoy the Deeside Way – a route of 40 miles which begins behind the guest house and largely follows the route of the old railway line to Aberdeen.  Cycle hire is available from Bike Hire Ballater who are opposite the Guest House.  The nearby Cambus o’ May woodlands have some excellent walking trails, while mountain bikers may enjoy the Tarland Trails.
